Stud Welding – What is it?
Stud Welding – What is it? This question is certainly apropos to answer for a stud welding blog such as this one. Believe it or not, there most certainly are a group of people out there who find metal and everything to do with metal to be particularly fascinating. Stud welding should be a very interesting topic in part to that group of people and for anyone who wonders about the mechanics involved in making almost anything that has metal.
Stud welding is a metal to metal fastening system. Not only that, however, it is an extremely fast and efficient method of fastening. When you watch a stud welding demonstration, the attachment speed and the sealing strength is really quite surprising. The stud welder takes the Arc or CD stud welding machine, places the weld gun against the parent metal and pow….once they pull the lever, the stud is attached instantly.
It is fastened with such strength and so quickly that immediately after the stud is attached, the stud welder can take a hammer to the stud and hit it as hard as they can and while the stud might bend, it will not come off of the parent metal even by the slightest bit.
When I saw this demonstration performed at the Sunbelt Stud Welding headquarters, I was quite surprised having never seen it in person before this moment. I had been around a lot of welding and metalworking in fabrication shops before and even tried my hand at a bit of Mig welding. Because of having tried it myself, I know that welding can be a bit of an art form for sure. Also, being involved in that industry, I was well aware of the requirements of experience and training that are involved in various forms of welding, i.e. mig, tig, stick…
However, stud welding doesn’t require the same kind of training that other forms of metalworking require. It also doesn’t seem to be like the welding that sends husbands and wives home after long days at work covered in complete filth and with holes burned through every article of their clothing.
Whenever it is possible to use stud welding equipment, rather than any other form of welding equipment, any employer and employee would be wise to make the stud welding choice. It is wildly fast. It is easy. It is also one of the strongest methods of welding.
